LIEF DATA DAGBOEK,

Thesis - Online privacy

ABSTRACT [ENG]

DEAR DATA-DIARY,

The subject for for this thesis is online privacy.

New technologies influence humanity, it influences society and as being a human, we get a better grasp at influencing our surrounding. The documentary 'Uw persoonlijke data zijn goud waard' is the starting point for this subject. In this documentary there is a future perspective sketched, based upon the idea that someone can get money for selling their personal (online) data. This has raised the research question;

How aware are we of our online privacy?

Offline privacy:
The most important appearance of privacy is actually the private place in every human, your place of thought, feelings and the inner. This space is where thoughts and feelings take place and these are private. This concept is known as the "self". But this private place is now a days subjected to our own society, and started early by the idea of Jeremy Bentham, the panopticon. The panopticon belongs to the ordered society that makes everything visible and possesses. This theory spreads out along with these measurements: identification obligations, bio-metric passes, BSN, connecting personal files, retention of traffic information (phone and e-mail files), smart cams, ambient intelligence (intelligent and self learning technology), pay-drive and the list goes on.

Online privacy:
The Internet is like an other world where men fulfills his duties and desires in an other dimension. The offline world that we used to know, does not meet our expectations, humanity has become to exacting. And with that the virtual world has entered an other dimension, one that can never meet up to our search for information, goods or services. Because of this, the Internet becomes a mirror of our thoughts.

Social media has changed the present format of gathering data, times have changed and with that, allot of data are visible on the Internet. Internet feels like a second life for allot of people, this is because we put up an image that is different then what we are. But, the computer windows have no curtains that grant us the private space that we need. Especially social media takes a wrong turn here, like Facebook that is granted more and more permissions to harvest information to sell to third parties. In short, do we not know that we are minimally protected? Especially with the example, that almost no one is aware of the fact that providers can read e-mails. The second point is that social media puts pressure upon us to be social and to be online. Because of this, the diary concept is put in place. We want to do everything online, share, tag and like. And the big problem that lies beneath is that online data does not expire. Because the easier it gets to put something online, the easier it is, to be found.

Visual translation:
There are quite some artists that work within the subject privacy. In many of these works the central point is the collection of data. Designers and artist express allot of critique about the present privacy rules. But not only design or art is discussed, also a movie (Red Road, 2006) that makes a strong visual translation within the subject of privacy. Designers and artist usually give an opinion about surveillance and privacy. Because of that opinion the spectator becomes more aware of his privacy. Projects such as Data-Mask from Sterling Crispin, Public Access To Me from Jonas Lund and Cash Machine from Sophie Calle will be discussed.

VOORWOORD

Hier ligt mijn focus, online privacy.
