Out of an appreciation and respect for our non-human kin and a desire for more caring ways of being, I started to collect moments of interaction between us and those we share this earth with. In an extensive list, I gradually combine and track information I’ve stumbled upon, heard or known, sought out, researched, experienced, read, or felt. The gathered contents are rooted in journalism, science, literature, social media and art. Repetition, rhythm, and familiarity give shape to the hard facts and frame the personal story of a lost opportunity at a family farm. This paper functions as an anchor for my artistic project, acting as a counterweight that allows me to explore gentler connections. It understands itself as an exhausted sigh in the long-known, holding what’s uncomfortable to see. It repeats and ruminates as a sort of chant, holding grief to affirm reorientation.

It's 13:24. 121 million have been killed since midnight for human consumption.

Our World in Data. “How Many Animals Are Slaughtered Every Day?” Our World in Data, ourworldindata.org/how-many-animals-get-slaughtered-every-day. Accessed 28 Mar. 2026. Calculation excluding fish due to insufficiant data: 900,000 cows + 1,400,000 goats + 1,700,000 sheep + 3,800,000 pigs + 11,800,000 ducks + 200,000,000 chickens = 219,600,000 animals per day / 86,400 seconds per day = 2,541.67 animals per second. Including fish with lowest estimated number: 219,600,000 mammals and birds + 3,106,000,000 wild and farmed fish = 3,325,600,000 animals killed per day / 86,400 seconds per day = 38’490.74 mammals, birds and fish killed per second.

Ordinarily I go to the woods alone,
with not a single friend,
for they are all smilers and talkers
and therefore unsuitable.
I don’t really want to be witnessed talking to the catbirds
or hugging the old black oak tree.
I have my ways of praying,
as you no doubt have yours.
Besides, when I am alone
I can become invisible.
I can sit on the top of a dune
as motionless as an uprise of weeds,
until the foxes run by unconcerned.
I can hear the almost unhearable sound of the roses singing.
If you have ever gone to the woods with me,
I must love you very much.

In the Seterlekh ceremony, an animal is liberated from dying for meat. The herder speaks directly to the animal, making a verbal pact that the family will not kill her, and that she must aid as protector for them and the herd. It is assumed that the selected animal understands human language because she holds greater power than the rest of the herd.
